Pregnancy Center East sponsors parenting classes that are held about every four months. The classes run for eight weeks and are conducted at our center in the Medical Arts Building at 2752 Erie Avenue, Suite No. 11, in Hyde Park, just across the street from the Public Library. We limit the classes to 7 or 8 people so that we can maintain the all-important one-on-one contact with our participants. The classes are about two hours long and meet once a week. These classes are open to any first time expectant mother who needs our assistance. Fathers are equally welcome and we encourage them to attend. The classes have group discussions and also provide support both before and after your baby is born.
If you attend all of the parenting sessions, you will receive a gift certificate for a new baby bed and mattress, as well as other gifts for your baby.
Our parenting classes address the following topics:
Nutrition: Our classes will provide information so that you can achieve good nutrition for you and your baby both before and after delivery.
Labor and Delivery: A nurse-midwife comes in to speak to you. We also show a video on giving birth. The nurse then covers all the aspects of your delivery from the anesthesia to the various types of birth you might experience.
Budgeting: Some of the many financial aspects of raising your child are discussed—from birth to college years. We also play a budgeting game that helps you understand what things cost.
Self-Esteem: Learn tips, suggestions and proven procedures for improving your self-esteem.
Baby Basics: How do you put diapers on your baby? How do you deal with rashes? How do you bathe your baby? How do you deal with an illness that your baby may contract? What are some of the things you can expect after you leave the hospital? How do you care for your baby’s umbilical cord? We try to answer just about any question that you can think of. And if we don’t know the information you need, we will try to help you find it.
Discipline: This class introduces various discipline styles and gives you a variety of suggestions on how to effectively and lovingly discipline your child.
Relationships and Wisdom for Parents: Marriage, single parenting, and family life are covered in detail during this session. You’ll explore the relationships in your life and define your goals for the future.
We also offer a mentoring program at our center. This program will place an experienced couple to mentor an inexperienced couple. Mentors are assigned following the completion of the parenting classes.
